Learn morePatients often tell us their exam here covered things they had never had checked before. That is usually the imaging. A standard sight test measures how well you see. It does not show the health of the tissue behind the eye, which is where the serious conditions begin.
Optical Coherence Tomography builds a cross sectional scan of your retina accurate to a few microns, layer by layer. It can reveal thinning at the optic nerve years before you would lose any noticeable vision. It is offered as an optional addition to your exam, and once done it gives us a baseline to compare against at future visits.

What patients tend to mention first is the explaining. Dr. Mungar walks you through each test as he runs it, shows you your own retinal scans on screen, and puts the findings in language that actually means something. If a result needs watching rather than treating, he will tell you that too.

A comprehensive exam takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Here is how the appointment runs, so there are no surprises.
We go through your vision concerns, general health, medications and family history. Conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure show up in the eyes, so this part genuinely matters.
We measure how clearly you see at distance and near, check how your eyes work together, and determine whether your prescription has shifted since your last visit.
Eye pressure, retinal imaging, optic nerve assessment and a look at the front surface of the eye. This is the part that screens for disease rather than blur.
Dr. Mungar walks you through what he found in plain language, shows you the scans, and sets out any treatment, monitoring or eyewear that makes sense.
Vision needs change considerably across a lifetime, and so does what an exam should be looking for. We see patients from their first school year through to their nineties, and in many Oakville families we see both parents and children.
If someone in your family has diabetes, annual diabetic eye exams are covered by OHIP at any age and are genuinely important. Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in Canada, and it is symptomless until it is advanced.

South Mississauga eye careCoverage in Ontario confuses almost everyone, so here is the straightforward version. OHIP funds one routine eye exam per year for anyone under 20 and anyone 65 or older. For those groups the exam itself costs you nothing.
Adults between 20 and 64 generally pay privately for a routine exam. There is an important exception. If you have a qualifying medical condition such as diabetes, glaucoma, cataracts, retinal disease or certain others, OHIP covers your exam at any age. Many people who qualify do not realise it, so mention any diagnosis when you book.
Most workplace and extended health plans cover routine exams and a portion of eyewear for adults. Bring your plan details and we will help you work out what applies.
No referral is needed. Optometrists are primary care providers in Ontario, so you can book directly. New patients are always welcome, whether you call us or book online.

Yes. If you have sudden vision loss, eye pain, flashes, a shower of new floaters, an injury or something caught in your eye, call us right away and we will make room for you.
